Sheringham backs Isak to beat Haaland to Golden Boot as Liverpool striker hits top form

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has declared Alexander Isak the best striker in the Premier League and backed the Liverpool forward to claim the Golden Boot ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland this season.

Isak has made a blistering start to the campaign, netting four Premier League goals — one more than he managed across the entirety of last season — after spending much of 2023-24 sidelined with a fractured fibula and an ankle injury sustained in December.

“For me, he’s the best striker in the Premier League. He is phenomenal,” Sheringham said in an interview with Hajper. “I’d like to see him win the Golden Boot this year, and not just to beat Erling Haaland but for the way that Isak plays the game, and how hungry he is for goals.”

Sheringham pointed to Isak’s performances under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola as evidence that the 25-year-old Sweden international has rediscovered his sharpest form, singling out his goals against Ipswich Town as a particular highlight.

“That should get the rest of the Premier League worried this season,” Sheringham added. “He looks back to his very best — sharp shooting, getting it out of his feet and… bang, goal.”

The former England striker also praised Isak’s movement and intelligence inside the box, arguing those qualities set him apart from his rivals. “When other strikers would be standing still on the penalty spot, he’s watching what is going on, always on the move in the box,” Sheringham said, citing Isak’s goal against Bournemouth as a prime example.

“He knows where the goal is on both sides, and he really is fantastic in the box — just being in the right place at the right time, and following up on chances. These are all the signs of a striker with the proper goalscoring attributes to be the very best in the world at what he does.”

Isak will look to extend his tally when the Premier League resumes following the international break.
