Seven in, 24 out: Manchester United's complete summer transfer window overhaul under Carrick

Manchester United ended the 2026 summer transfer window with seven new signings and 24 players out the door, completing a sweeping squad overhaul in Michael Carrick’s first window as permanent manager. The club failed to land a left-back before the deadline but reshaped their midfield entirely.

The Arrivals

Midfield was United’s clear priority from the outset. Andrey Santos arrived first, joining from Chelsea for £48m, with Youri Tielemans following the very next day from Aston Villa for £35m. A third central midfielder was added in late August when United agreed a fee of up to £70m with Brighton for Carlos Baleba.

Experienced Wales international goalkeeper Karl Darlow also joined on a free transfer following his Leeds United exit, providing cover between the posts.

United rounded out their window with three younger additions. Tynan Thompson arrived from Tottenham in a seven-figure deal, Colombian teenager Cristian Orozco was signed from Fortaleza, and 20-year-old goalkeeper Kit Margetson joined from Swansea.

The Departures

The exits began before the summer window even opened. Napoli’s Champions League qualification triggered a permanent buy clause for Rasmus Hojlund, ending his time at Old Trafford. A wave of first-team players were then released at the end of June: Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Sonny Aljofree, Malachi Sharpe and James Bailey all departed.

Tyler Fredricson moved to Lausanne-Sport at the end of July. Academy players Radek Vitek, Ethan Ennis and Ethan Williams were sent to EFL clubs, while James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye joined the Arsenal academy. Toby Collyer left for West Brom and Louis Jackson signed for St Mirren in the days before the deadline.

United also sent nine players out on loan, including goalkeepers Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, Elyh Harrison and Solomon Honon among those departing temporarily.

Early Results Under Carrick

United have faced a difficult start to the Premier League season, losing their opening fixture at Hull City before bouncing back with a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town. Carrick’s squad, now significantly reshaped in midfield, will need to integrate the new arrivals quickly as the campaign builds momentum.
