Sesko's clinical finish reminds Carrick he has a natural number nine as United ease past Sabah 4-0

Benjamin Sesko underlined his credentials as Manchester United’s first-choice striker with a composed finish in a 4-0 Champions League group-stage victory over Azerbaijani champions Sabah at Old Trafford.

The Slovenian forward, introduced as a substitute, was sent clear by Bryan Mbeumo’s pass just before half-time, took contact from goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov, stayed on his feet and converted with the minimum of fuss. It was the kind of instinctive, line-leading finish that defines a natural number nine — and manager Michael Carrick would have noticed.

Sesko has yet to start a Premier League match this season, but his performances since Carrick took charge have been consistently clinical. Every emphatic celebration after scoring suggests the striker believes he should be in the starting XI, and the evidence is building that Carrick will soon agree. Whether that moment arrives as soon as Sunday’s Manchester derby against City is now the most pressing question to emerge from an otherwise routine evening.

The comfortable nature of the win — Matheus Cunha opened the scoring after a Patrick Dorgu assist, Bruno Fernandes added a second from a Youri Tielemans lay-off, and Sesko’s finish made it three before a fourth completed the rout — gave Carrick the opportunity to experiment with his defensive shape. The results were mixed. Dorgu was lively in attack but exposed defensively on a couple of occasions, most notably when Joy-Lance Mickels headed wide from close range with the score still at 1-0.

Sabah, who will likely serve as target practice for every side they face in this phase of the competition, rarely threatened in any meaningful way. But United’s defensive uncertainty on those rare occasions was noted, and Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot are expected to return to the back line for the derby.
