Sent off for elbow, Ethan Mbappé leaves LOSC down to ten men against Betis
Author of an assist in the first half, Ethan Mbappé was sent off after the hour mark for an elbow on defender Natan, leaving LOSC with ten men against Real Betis in the Champions League.
Ethan Mbappé was sent off in the Champions League on Tuesday evening during the match between LOSC and Real Betis, following an elbow to Brazilian defender Natan. VAR alerted Bulgarian referee M. Kabakov, who did not hesitate to show the red card.
The incident occurred at a tense moment: LOSC, which led 2-1 at half-time, had just conceded a third Andalusian goal. It was in the immediate aftermath of this turnaround that Ethan Mbappé elbowed Natan in the face as he passed by. The gesture, initially missed by the on-field referee, did not escape video assistance.
The cruel irony of the timing is harsh for the Lille attacking midfielder, who had delivered a convincing first half up to that point. Sharp from the start, he had notably provided the assist for Ayase Ueda’s opening goal, confirming his strong start to the season in Ligue 1.
Direct consequence of this expulsion: Kylian Mbappé’s younger brother will automatically miss LOSC’s next league phase match, an away trip to Arsenal. An additional suspension remains possible depending on UEFA’s decision, which could increase the sanction given the nature of the gesture.
