Seattle Seawolves re-sign Coetzer as South Africa-born fly-half targets 2027 USA World Cup place
David Coetzer has re-signed with the Seattle Seawolves for the 2027 MLR season, with the former South Africa U20 fly-half set to become US-qualified next year and targeting a place in the Eagles squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
David Coetzer has committed to the Seattle Seawolves for the 2027 MLR season, with the former South Africa U20 fly-half targeting a place in the USA Eagles squad for the Rugby World Cup in Australia after becoming US-qualified next year.
The 27-year-old Plettenberg Bay-born playmaker will not be eligible to represent the Eagles at full international level until 2026, but has already been involved in the USA representative setup. USA XV coach Scott Lawrence selected Coetzer for the side that faced an Argentina XV in Miami earlier this year, and he is currently part of the squad facing Australia A in two matches in New Jersey — neither fixture counting as a full Test, meaning his eligibility clock is unaffected.
Coetzer arrived in Major League Rugby ahead of the 2022 season, signing with the Houston SaberCats and making 15 appearances as the club reached the playoffs for the first time. He earned All MLR Second XV honours the following campaign after scoring 135 points, and has now accumulated more than 450 points across five MLR seasons. Seattle first signed him ahead of the 2026 season, with Coetzer playing a key role as the Seawolves reached the semi-finals.
Seawolves Director of Rugby and head coach Allen Clarke was emphatic in his praise for the re-signing. “He’s a fantastic person and teammate who brings energy, commitment and care to everything he does,” Clarke said. “He has a real influence on the group, not just through his performances on the field, but through the standards he sets, the way he competes and how he contributes to the team environment.”
Clarke also made clear that the club sees Coetzer’s international ambitions as central to his return. “As a US-qualified player, he’s determined to represent the Eagles at the 2027 Rugby World Cup, and we’re excited to support that ambition. I believe Davy has an important role to play in driving this team forward.”
Coetzer, a product of the University of Pretoria, echoed that enthusiasm. “I’m very excited to return to the Seawolves next season and contribute to an exciting brand of rugby and continue the hunt for the MLR shield,” he said.
