For Sanchez, it was the kind of error that invites uncomfortable questions — not least because it was far from an isolated one. The Spanish stopper was temporarily dropped in favour of Filip Jorgensen during the early months of Liam Rosenior’s tenure last season, and a pattern of high-profile mistakes has followed him throughout his time at Stamford Bridge.

New head coach Xabi Alonso now faces a decision in the goalkeeper position, and the context around it has shifted considerably from 12 months ago. Sanchez, at 29, no longer holds the distinction of being the squad’s elder statesman. Sanchez, for his part, will need to demonstrate the consistency and composure that has too often eluded him if he is to hold off a challenge from a keeper who appears ready to step up.
