Phil Foden has declared his ambition to force his way back into the England squad as the Manchester City forward builds momentum heading into a Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

The 26-year-old missed England’s summer World Cup campaign but has caught the eye in recent weeks, registering six goals and assists across three starts since returning from the suspension that followed his red card in the Manchester derby. That sending off kept him out for a month, yet Foden says the enforced break proved beneficial.

“Obviously I had the unfortunate red card against United, but the break has done me good,” Foden said. “I think I came back really fresh minded and sharp. I’ve been involved in a lot of goals recently, so I’ve been really happy with my performance.”

Foden smashed a hat-trick in his most recent Champions League outing for City and arrives at this week’s fixture against Leipzig in confident mood. His return to form is timely for Enzo Maresca’s side, who face back-to-back tests against Leipzig and Nottingham Forest and are keen to demonstrate they are not overly dependent on Erling Haaland for their attacking output.

After two seasons disrupted by inconsistency, the City academy graduate appears to have turned a corner. He is measured about his progress, though, stopping short of any grand declarations.

“Just keep playing regularly, being happy, positive and being in the right position to score as well,” he said. “Hopefully I can get back to that level. I think I’m starting to get back there now in my recent performances. I just hope I keep growing and keep getting better.”

On the prospect of an England recall under Thomas Tuchel, Foden was cautious but optimistic. “You just have to keep trying your best on the football field, keep putting in performances. That’s all we’re trying to do really, is focus on your own game. Hopefully one day the call-up might come back.”

Whether Tuchel includes him in his November squad remains to be seen, but Foden’s recent output gives him a credible case to make.
