Salah leaves Liverpool as a free agent with Saudi Arabia, Serie A and MLS among his options
Mohamed Salah has departed Liverpool after agreeing to terminate his contract a year early, ending a nine-year stay at Anfield. The 34-year-old will not decide his next club until Egypt's World Cup 2026 campaign concludes, with Saudi Arabia, Inter Milan, Juventus and MLS among the reported destinations.
Mohamed Salah is a free agent after agreeing to terminate his Liverpool contract a year ahead of schedule, bringing a nine-year tenure at Anfield to a close. The 34-year-old forward will not commit to a new club until Egypt’s World Cup 2026 campaign ends, with the Pharaohs facing Australia in a round-of-32 fixture on Friday.
The Saudi Pro League remains the most heavily rumoured destination, with a multi-million-pound deal long reported to be on the table. However, the sudden departure of league chief executive Michael Emenalo has introduced an unexpected complication to those plans, adding uncertainty to what had appeared the likeliest outcome.
Serie A presents a credible alternative, with Inter Milan and Juventus both credited with strong interest. A move to Italy would represent a return to a country where Salah previously played for Fiorentina and Roma before establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s greatest-ever forwards.
Turkish clubs Fenerbahce and Galatasaray are also monitoring the situation, though a move to the Super Lig is considered an outside bet. Major League Soccer franchises are reportedly preparing pitches of their own, while a shock Premier League stay — with Chelsea floated as a theoretical suitor — is described as extremely unlikely despite public encouragement from Blues legend Didier Drogba.
One door firmly closed is a return to Liverpool. With the club moving forward under new manager Andoni Iraola and his substantial wages removed from the wage bill, a romantic comeback to Anfield is said to be entirely out of the question.
Regardless of his next destination, Salah departs Merseyside as one of the club’s most decorated players, having rewritten Liverpool’s modern scoring records across nearly a decade of service.
