Salah flies back to Liverpool as wife gives birth to first son, named Leil

Mohamed Salah flew back to Liverpool this week after his wife Magi gave birth to their first son — the couple’s third child — in the city where the family spent nearly a decade during his time at the club.

Salah’s sister Rabab announced the news on social media, revealing the boy has been named Leil, an Arabic word meaning “night.” Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan confirmed the birth during a public appearance, noting that both Salah and former Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana had recently become fathers. “After the match, I travelled abroad with Salah and Andre Onana,” Dogan told Turkish outlet 61saat. “Both of them had new children — Onana had twins and Salah a baby boy. I congratulate their families and their wives.”

Salah, 34, and Magi are childhood sweethearts who grew up together in Nagrig, Egypt, and married in 2013. Their eldest daughter Makka was born in 2014, followed by Kayan in 2020. The family had lived in Liverpool for the better part of a decade, and Salah had previously spoken warmly about their attachment to the city. “They feel at home here,” he said. “Magi and the kids were very happy that we’re staying another two years. It feels like home so everyone was happy.”

Despite those sentiments, the two-year contract extension Salah signed in 2025 was terminated a year early by mutual agreement, and he subsequently joined Trabzonspor in Turkey.

His debut season there has already been turbulent. Head coach Fatih Tekke left the club following a 5-0 aggregate elimination by Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the Europa League play-offs. Salah responded to the exit with a statement on social media that signalled his intent to stay the course: “Nothing in my career ever came easy. Bad nights and disappointments are part of football, and I have learned to turn them into motivation and into trophies. Trabzonspor is my club, and I am part of this project, body and soul. I came here to win is not just a slogan to me.”
