Saint-Étienne targets Guingamp defender Sohaib Naïr to kick off summer transfer window
Relegated to Ligue 2 for a second consecutive season, AS Saint-Étienne is in advanced negotiations to sign Sohaib Naïr, Guingamp's centre-back whose contract expires in a year.
AS Saint-Étienne may have found its first summer signing: according to specialist outlet Peuple-Vert, the Saint-Étienne club is in advanced talks with Sohaib Naïr, Guingamp’s centre-back, over a transfer this summer.
A youth international, Naïr currently plays in Ligue 2 with the Breton club, where he is under contract until June 2026. The player is reportedly keen on joining Le Chaudron, but a financial agreement between the two clubs still needs to be reached to complete the deal.
This prospect emerges following the appointment of Ian Cathro as head coach. The Scot, recently confirmed on the Greens’ bench, will now have a say in transfer decisions. Training resumes on 1 July at the training centre, which gives an indication of the timeline the board hopes to follow for its first arrivals.
Saint-Étienne is approaching this transfer window with the objective of strengthening a squad set to compete in a second consecutive season in France’s second division, following last season’s relegation.
