Saint-Etienne beats Manchester United to sign Senegalese winger Etienne Mendy
Courted by Manchester United after a successful trial, 18-year-old Senegalese winger Etienne Mendy has chosen AS Saint-Etienne. The player, from Diambars academy, is already in the Forez awaiting official confirmation.
AS Saint-Etienne has snatched Etienne Mendy from Manchester United. The 18-year-old Senegalese winger, who had impressed during a trial with the Red Devils, ultimately opted for the Greens, according to Peuple-Vert.
Mendy arrived in the Forez a week ago to prepare his integration ahead of the imminent official confirmation of his transfer. The player comes from Diambars, Senegal’s leading academy, after a full season in the Senegalese second division during which he contributed to his club’s promotion to the top flight.
Despite his potential, the young winger is not expected to join the professional squad coached by Ian Cathro immediately. He will first go through the Saint-Etienne reserve team to acclimatize to his new environment, before a possible promotion during the season.
