Russell's 2026 title bid branded a write-off as analyst urges focus on 2027

George Russell’s 2026 Formula 1 title challenge is effectively finished, according to F1 TV analyst and former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe, who urged the Briton to redirect his energy toward 2027 following the Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s Madring circuit.

Russell finished fifth at the inaugural Madring race while team-mate Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth career victory after capitalising on a timely virtual safety car. The result extended Antonelli’s lead in the drivers’ standings to 81 points over Russell, a gap that leaves the 28-year-old with only a mathematical — rather than realistic — path to the title.

Russell himself acknowledged the situation after the race. “Realistically, I’m not in the fight for the drivers, and that just allows me to focus on race-by-race and trying to get some good results,” he told F1 TV.

Hinchcliffe, reviewing those comments on the F1 TV post-race show, went further, arguing that Russell should now treat the remaining rounds as a development runway for next season.

“This year is a write-off from a championship standpoint for him,” Hinchcliffe said. “He’s now got this next string of races before the end of the season to really dial in so that way he can hit the ground running in 2027. You can almost argue 2027 starts in Baku.”

Hinchcliffe also pointed to the performance gap between the two Mercedes drivers as the key issue Russell must solve. “Focus on finding what it is that is holding him back from matching the pace of Kimi,” he added. “Most people are realistically out of the championship at this point, so it’s probably best that he takes that mentality and just takes it race by race.”

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit is scheduled for 24–26 September, the race Hinchcliffe identified as the unofficial start of Russell’s 2027 campaign.
