Russell dominates Zandvoort sprint for third Saturday win as Antonelli slips to fourth
George Russell led every lap of the Dutch Grand Prix sprint race from pole to claim his third Saturday victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris completed the podium, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli could only manage fourth after floor damage hampered his qualifying.
George Russell converted pole position into a commanding sprint-race victory at Zandvoort on Saturday, crossing the line 1.4 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to secure his third Saturday win of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Lando Norris held on for third, while Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli — starting fifth after a damaging qualifying session — finished fourth.
Antonelli had entered the weekend as the driver to beat, but an off at the penultimate corner during SQ1 cost him an estimated “25 points” of downforce due to floor damage, dropping him to fifth on the sprint grid and handing Russell a clear run from the front row.
At lights out, Russell held Norris cleanly through the first corner while Antonelli immediately moved up a place with an ambitious sweep around the outside of Oscar Piastri at Turn 1. The 19-year-old then pressed Leclerc hard in the opening laps, but the tight Zandvoort circuit offered little room for a decisive move.
The race remained largely static until lap 10, when Mercedes released Russell to push harder. He quickly pulled two seconds clear of a struggling Norris, who reported a lack of rear grip. “I’ve got no rear,” said the reigning world champion, his mirrors filled with Leclerc and Antonelli as the pressure mounted.
Leclerc, who had started on soft tyres while the rest ran mediums, finally converted that pressure into a pass on Norris down the inside at Turn 1 on lap 18. The Ferrari moved clear, but Norris still had Antonelli breathing down his neck. In the end, the McLaren driver held the position — Zandvoort’s narrow layout once again proving that closing the gap and making the pass are very different challenges.
Russell took the win ahead of Leclerc, who claimed his third sprint podium of 2026. Antonelli finished fourth, 0.4 seconds behind Norris, with Piastri fifth and Max Verstappen sixth — just 0.3 seconds adrift of his team-mate in front of his home crowd. Lewis Hamilton was seventh in the second Ferrari, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly rounding out the points in eighth.
The result leaves Antonelli’s championship lead intact heading into Sunday’s grand prix, but Russell will carry momentum from a dominant afternoon into the main event.
