Russell reveals extra fuel lap cost him pole as Hamilton edges Mexican GP qualifying by 0.009s
George Russell will start second on the grid for the Mexican Grand Prix after losing pole to Lewis Hamilton by just 0.009 seconds. The Mercedes driver believes carrying fuel for an additional preparation lap was the decisive margin.
George Russell narrowly missed pole position for the Mexican Grand Prix on Saturday, beaten to the top spot by Lewis Hamilton by a mere 0.009 seconds after a strategic call to run a preparation lap in Q3 left him carrying extra fuel weight. Charles Leclerc qualified third, completing an all-star front row and a half.
Russell was candid in the post-qualifying press conference about the decision that he believes cost him. While Hamilton, Leclerc, and Max Verstappen skipped preparation laps on their final Q3 runs, Mercedes instructed Russell to complete one in order to build tyre temperature.
“My gut told me we could do it on lap one without the preparation, but the team wanted to do the prep, so we ended up carrying the fuel for an extra lap,” Russell said. “It’s such a small number, but it’s bigger than the gap to pole.”
The 28-year-old admitted his weekend had given little indication of what was to come. “I don’t think there was a single lap this whole weekend ahead of Q3 that I looked in the mix to even fight for the top three, let alone pole position. But that last lap just came together really nicely. I’d love to know exactly why, but I don’t have those answers.”
Russell described the inconsistency as a recurring theme this season. “It’s a little bit of a story of my season. It’s either a terrible lap or a very strong lap, and this is quite frustrating,” he said, adding that he remains confident in his underlying pace. “I know it’s in there. I’ve never doubted that it’s in there. It’s just understanding why this season we can’t achieve it as consistently as I have done in the past.”
The qualifying result carries added championship significance. Russell sits second in the drivers’ standings, 123 points behind teammate and series leader Kimi Antonelli, who has the opportunity to clinch the title at this weekend’s race. Hamilton, meanwhile, trails Russell by just one point in the standings, with only nine points separating second place from fifth — making Sunday’s race a pivotal moment in the fight for runner-up honours.
