George Russell has claimed the unofficial 2026 Formula 1 sprint championship on countback after finishing the six-race sprint season level on 34 points with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc — a title decided, in part, by Lando Norris’s last-lap clash with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri at the Singapore Grand Prix.

While Formula 1 does not award an official sprint championship, the standings across all six sprint races — held in China, Miami, Canada, Britain, the Netherlands and Singapore — place Russell on top by virtue of his three sprint victories. Leclerc matched his 34-point haul without a single sprint win, leaving the Mercedes driver to claim the honour on countback.

Norris finished third in the unofficial standings on 33 points, his Miami sprint victory not enough to overhaul the leading pair. Behind the top three, Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli scored 31 points, Lewis Hamilton 27, Piastri 21 and Max Verstappen 20. Points are awarded to the top eight sprint finishers on a scale of eight down to one.

The result offers Russell a measure of consolation as the main 2026 drivers’ championship increasingly slips from his grasp. Antonelli leads the overall standings with 340 points, with Russell second on 238 and Hamilton third on 229. Verstappen sits fourth on 221 points, arriving at the United States Grand Prix on the back of consecutive wins at the Bahrain and Singapore Grands Prix. Leclerc rounds out the top five on 215 points.

Six rounds remain in the main championship, assuming the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix proceed as scheduled, leaving Antonelli with a 102-point cushion over Russell with the title fight entering its final phase.
