Russell claims Barcelona pole ahead of Hamilton as Leclerc crashes in qualifying
George Russell secured pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton lining up second for Ferrari. Kimi Antonelli qualified third, while Charles Leclerc was left to rue a qualifying crash.
George Russell put his Mercedes on pole position for the 2026 Formula 1 Barcelona Grand Prix, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton slotting in alongside him on the front row after Saturday qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Kimi Antonelli will start third for Mercedes, giving the Silver Arrows a strong double presence at the front of the grid. Lando Norris qualified fourth, continuing McLaren’s competitive showing through the Spanish weekend.
The session was not without drama. Charles Leclerc crashed during qualifying, leaving the Monégasque driver — by his own admission — feeling “ashamed” of himself after the incident ended his hopes of a strong grid slot. The crash will add further pressure on Leclerc heading into Sunday’s race, with Ferrari relying on Hamilton to carry the fight from second on the grid.
Toto Wolff acknowledged the threat Hamilton poses from the front row, with the seven-time world champion now racing for Ferrari in what remains one of the most high-profile driver moves in recent memory.
The provisional starting grid is subject to final validation by the FIA before the race gets underway.
