Manchester City’s backup goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli saved spot-kicks from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to send the holders into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, edging past Brighton 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

City twice came from behind in a compelling tie between two heavily rotated sides. Malick Yalcouye opened the scoring for Brighton after 30 minutes before Mateo Kovacic — who later missed in the shootout — levelled before half-time. Georginio Rutter restored the visitors’ lead and struck the bar, but Vitor Reis diverted in a Rayan Cherki free-kick to force penalties. Enzo Maresca had made nine changes to the side beaten at Aston Villa, with Erling Haaland, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ruben Dias, Elliot Anderson and Josko Gvardiol all absent after being given brief holidays.

Bournemouth produced the most emphatic result of the round, thumping Aston Villa 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for the first time in eight seasons. Amine Adli fired Marco Rose’s side ahead in the seventh minute, Lewis Cook added a fortuitous second early in the second half, and Alvaro Rodriguez sealed a fifth consecutive win in all competitions — a run that has also included 3-0 victories over AC Milan and Manchester United. Villa, five-time League Cup winners, were second best throughout and suffered their first defeat in eight games, with Bournemouth keeping a fifth successive clean sheet.

Crystal Palace eased some of the pressure on manager Pierre Sage with a 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, Eddie Nketiah’s first-half goal proving the difference. Fulham dominated large spells of the contest but could not find a way through, leaving Palace to advance despite offering little to reassure their travelling supporters that a difficult start to the season is behind them.

Sunderland also progressed to the quarter-finals, joining City, Bournemouth and Palace in the last eight of the competition.
