Roy Keane dismisses 15-year-old Gabriel's United exit request as 'spitting his dummy out'

Manchester United have been left stunned after 15-year-old academy prodigy JJ Gabriel submitted a request to have his registration cancelled this week, just days before he was due to potentially make his first-team debut against Brighton at Old Trafford.

Gabriel had been included in Michael Carrick’s plans for the Brighton fixture — a match United lost 3-2 after leading 2-0 — and had he featured, he would have become the youngest player in the club’s history. Instead, his surprise exit request has thrown his future at the club into doubt.

Roy Keane addressed the situation bluntly on The Overlap, framing it in the context of United’s recent poor form. “Carrick’s under pressure. Obviously, Ferguson, we go back and sometimes you’d throw lads into the first team, but United they need wins,” Keane said. “I don’t think United are in the position to go ‘We can write off a cup game tonight and play a couple of young lads’. No, we need to get some wins, we need to get some momentum into the season and if some 15-year-old is spitting his dummy out, we’ll deal with that.”

Carrick, speaking after the Brighton defeat, took a more measured tone, emphasising the need to protect Gabriel given his age. “I just think we’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation, you know,” the United manager said. “He’s a young boy, he’s 15, and for me, definitely, and from a club point of view, is looking after our younger players, their welfare, their well-being, their exposure.”

Carrick reiterated that concern in a separate interview, saying: “It’s more about the welfare, the care and the attention of JJ as a child, really. He’s certainly a young man. The situation is what it is, but we have to be careful about the exposure on that one.”

Despite the request, United have not yet accepted Gabriel’s application to be de-registered and believe the situation can still be resolved, with time remaining on his contract. However, Gabriel holds an Irish passport and will be eligible to negotiate a move abroad once he turns 16 next month, which could complicate United’s efforts to keep him.

The teenager had been one of the most exciting prospects in United’s academy system, scoring 26 goals in 29 matches for the club’s under-18s last season before being elevated to regular senior training sessions under Carrick. He also featured for the first team during pre-season, though he is yet to make an official competitive appearance.
