Rosas stuns Barcelos with fifth-round knockout to claim first UFC main event

Raul Rosas Jr. pulled off one of the year’s most dramatic reversals at UFC Vegas 121 on Saturday, stopping Raoni Barcelos in the fifth round after the Brazilian went unconscious and limp from a takedown at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas — a frightening finish that saw Barcelos stretchered from the cage.

Both fighters were making their first appearances as UFC headliners, and the bout delivered four rounds of relentless action before the alarming conclusion. Rosas came out aggressively in the opening round, throwing high-volume combinations at his veteran opponent, but Barcelos began to find his rhythm and carried that momentum into the second, landing nearly 60 significant strikes as Rosas visibly faded.

The third round was closely contested. Barcelos produced a sharp foot-sweep takedown and took dominant back position, only for Rosas to sweep, secure top control, and land ground-and-pound of his own. Barcelos rose and continued to accumulate damage on the younger fighter heading into the fourth.

Round four belonged almost entirely to Barcelos, who delivered a sustained beating both on the feet and on the canvas, coming close to finishing the fight on several occasions. Rosas entered the fifth knowing a finish was his only route to victory.

With multiple replays, the precise mechanism that rendered Barcelos unconscious was difficult to identify, but the effect was unmistakable — he went limp immediately after the takedown landed and required medical attention on the canvas before being stretchered out of the arena.

After the victory, Rosas praised Barcelos for his toughness, called for a performance bonus, and requested a top-seven opponent as his next assignment.
