Rosas Jr. targets UFC title and early retirement before turning 26

Raul Rosas Jr. has mapped out an ambitious and unusually brief career plan: win UFC gold, defend it, climb the weight classes, and walk away — possibly before his 26th birthday.

The bantamweight prospect, riding a five-fight win streak, makes his first UFC main event appearance on Sept. 26 at Meta Apex in Las Vegas, headlining UFC Vegas 121 against Brazilian veteran Raoni Barcelos. The bout represents the next step in a trajectory that began in 2022, when Rosas Jr. became the youngest fighter ever to sign with the UFC at just 17 years old.

“If by 25 I’ve accomplished everything I want, I’m just gonna step back from the sport,” Rosas Jr. told Full Send MMA. “The goal is to get the belt and then defend it a couple of times, try to challenge myself and go up a weight class, maybe two. After I’ve run out of goals, it could be 26, 27, 28; whenever I’m done with my goals, I’m gonna step out of the game.”

The checklist Rosas Jr. has set for himself is substantial for any fighter, let alone one still in his early 20s: a UFC bantamweight title, multiple successful defenses, and at least one — possibly two — weight-class jumps. He has acknowledged the timeline may stretch beyond 25 depending on how quickly those goals are achieved, but the intent to retire young remains firm.

Nicknamed “El Nino Problema,” Rosas Jr. has spoken previously about stepping away from the sport in his mid-20s, and his recent comments confirm that plan has not changed. The Sept. 26 main event against Barcelos, a seasoned 36-year-old with 30 professional fights, will be a significant test of whether the prospect is ready to begin climbing toward the title picture he has set his sights on.
