Rooney demands 'firework' in United dressing room after spineless 3-0 Bournemouth defeat
Wayne Rooney has launched a furious attack on Manchester United's players for lacking emotion and effort following Sunday's 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, United's eighth game without a win, with manager Michael Carrick under severe pressure.
Wayne Rooney has delivered a scathing verdict on Manchester United’s players after their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, calling out the squad for a lack of emotion and work rate as manager Michael Carrick edges closer to the sack.
The loss extended United’s winless run to eight games in all competitions and prompted Rooney, speaking on the Stick to United podcast with Mark Goldbridge, to say he would walk into the dressing room and confront the players directly if given the chance.
“I’d love to go into that dressing room. I’d love to walk in, sit them all fing down and say, ‘what the f are you doing? What type of performance do you think this is? Do you think you all deserve to wear that shirt with how you’re all walking around the pitch?’” Rooney said. “I’d put a firework up their a* because they’re fing not doing anything.”
Rooney singled out the manner in which United’s players moved — or failed to move — across the pitch, pointing to a moment when Lisandro Martínez was rounded by Bournemouth’s Rayan as emblematic of a wider malaise.
“I don’t think the players have a leg to stand on, what’s not fair is the performances they’re giving. I saw the pain and anger on the fans’ faces,” he said. “Them players walking around a football pitch — they’re not getting to the ball, it’s so frustrating as a player.”
The former United striker drew a direct contrast with his own playing style, arguing that effort and commitment were non-negotiable regardless of individual quality. “I was a player who, obviously I could score a goal or a bit of ability, whatever, but at least I ran, worked hard and put myself about for the team, even when it was tough. These players aren’t doing that.”
Rooney also framed the issue in broader terms, arguing that emotion is fundamental to football and that United’s squad have lost touch with it entirely. “Football is a game of emotions. The whole game is about emotions, what it does to you, makes your weekend the best weekend ever, or not wanting to leave the house. But now, the players are numb, they look like they have no emotions and don’t care — some of them might, but they’re getting dragged down.”
Carrick remains in charge for now, but with United’s form showing no sign of recovery, the pressure on the club’s hierarchy to act is intensifying.
