Carrick survives United sacking despite 3-0 Bournemouth humiliation to face Chelsea

Manchester United have reversed course and retained Michael Carrick as head coach despite a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth that left the club hovering above the relegation zone. The decision followed crisis talks between CEO Omar Berrada, director of football Jason Wilcox, and co-owners the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager after the club reversed an expected decision to sack him following Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, with United sitting just above the Premier League relegation zone.

Crisis talks involving chief executive Omar Berrada, director of football Jason Wilcox, co-owners the Glazer family, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe concluded with Carrick keeping his job. He took training at Carrington on Tuesday morning and will now prepare for the trip to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea this weekend.

The reversal surprised many, not least because Carrick himself appeared resigned to his dismissal after the Bournemouth loss. “It’s a tough situation, there’s no hiding from it,” he said post-match. “What it looks like and what’s next, I really don’t know. I will always do my best for the football club and I won’t change that now. I love what I do and I feel the responsibility — we’ll have to wait and see.”

The decision to keep Carrick in place carries its own message. It suggests those running the club believe United’s problems run deeper than the identity of the head coach, and that a managerial change alone would not address the structural issues plaguing the squad.

Carrick’s position has not been without internal friction. Bruno Fernandes was dropped for the Bournemouth fixture after publicly criticising Carrick’s tactics following a heavy Champions League defeat against Como. Carrick insisted the call was a “pure football” decision rather than a disciplinary one, but Fernandes did not feature for a single minute. The Portugal captain arrived at Carrington on Tuesday morning, and whether he returns to the starting lineup at Chelsea will be one of the most closely watched selection calls of Carrick’s tenure.

Fernandes’s social media activity added further intrigue after the defeat, with his Instagram account appearing to like a video accompanied by the caption: “Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care.”

Reaction among supporters has been mixed. Many United fans applauded Carrick after the Bournemouth loss, directing their frustration at the players rather than the manager. How the squad responds to the decision — and to Carrick’s authority — is likely to be tested immediately at Stamford Bridge.
