Ronaldo walks out on Portugal at 41 with his international future unresolved
Cristiano Ronaldo has abruptly left the Portugal national team camp following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, leaving his international future uncertain. The 40-cap record holder departed on 146 goals and 234 caps, with no farewell fixture currently planned.
Cristiano Ronaldo has walked away from the Portugal national team after a falling-out with head coach Jorge Jesus during the recent international break, leaving his future with the side unresolved at the age of 41.
Ronaldo announced his departure in a statement posted to Instagram, writing: “After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”
According to Spanish outlet Marca, the trigger was Jesus changing his selection plans mid-camp — a decision that prompted Ronaldo to leave the squad. He departs as Portugal’s all-time record scorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals and 234 appearances.
Portugal have shown little sign of missing him. Without Ronaldo, they beat Norway 2-1 in Porto, with Gonçalo Ramos — the striker who famously replaced him to score a hat-trick at the 2022 World Cup — netting the winning goal once again. Bruno Fernandes has assumed the captaincy in Ronaldo’s absence.
The question of whether Ronaldo will receive a formal send-off, similar to the farewell tour Lionel Messi is currently enjoying with Argentina, remains open. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reported on Instagram that Ronaldo has left Europe and returned to Riyadh following tense discussions, with Al Nassr set to resume training with him shortly.
“Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus will both clarify their positions ahead of a final verdict on future chapters with Portugal,” Romano wrote, suggesting the situation is not yet fully closed.
There are currently no plans for a one-off farewell fixture, and no reconciliation with the national team is understood to be in the works. Whether Ronaldo chooses to make a formal announcement about his international retirement — or simply never returns — remains to be seen.
