Ronald Koeman Jr was visibly overcome with emotion during Telstar’s Eredivisie fixture against AZ Alkmaar on Sunday, as the stadium fell into applause in the 12th minute to honour his mother, Bartina Koeman-Boddeveld, who passed away earlier in the week aged 65 after a long illness.

AZ paused the match to allow a minute’s applause, displaying a photograph of Bartina on the big screen. The 31-year-old goalkeeper, unable to hold back his grief, wiped tears from his face as the entire stadium rose to its feet. Telstar head coach Henk Brugge was also seen in tears on the touchline.

Koeman Jr’s father, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, announced his wife’s death on Tuesday in an Instagram post. “With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mom and grandma,” he wrote. “Bartina Koeman-Boddeveld. January 30 – September 15 2026. Familie Koeman.” The couple had been married for 41 years and have three children: eldest son Tim, daughter Debbie, and Ronald Jr.

The elder Koeman had stepped down from the Netherlands head coach role this summer following the country’s World Cup exit, citing his wife’s illness as having reshaped his priorities. “The past years have made me realise again that there are more important things than football,” he said. “When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes. My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach, despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength.”

On the pitch, AZ won the match 1-0, with Mexx Meerdink scoring the only goal in the first half. The result left Telstar 13th in the Eredivisie table with just one league win to their name this season.

Koeman Jr has been at Telstar since joining from Oss in 2021 and has made 165 appearances for the IJmuiden club, who earned promotion to the Eredivisie in 2024-25. Sunday’s game was his first since his mother’s death.
