Roma eye Garnacho as Man United stand to profit from Chelsea sell-on clause
AS Roma are reportedly interested in signing Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea this summer, a move that would trigger Manchester United's 10 per cent sell-on clause from his £40m departure to Stamford Bridge last year.
Manchester United could earn a second financial windfall from Alejandro Garnacho after journalist Alfredo Pedulla reported that AS Roma are interested in signing the Argentine winger from Chelsea this summer. Garnacho moved to Stamford Bridge from Old Trafford last summer for £40 million, with United negotiating a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal.
Roma’s reported qualification for the Champions League is said to be central to their ability to pursue a permanent transfer. Should Chelsea agree to sell, United would be entitled to a slice of whatever fee is agreed — a further boost for a club still working to complete summer business under manager Michael Carrick.
Garnacho has struggled to make an impact since joining Chelsea, and because he was an academy signing — arriving from Atletico Madrid for just £100,000 in 2020 — the original £40m fee was recorded as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. Any sell-on income would carry the same accounting benefit for United.
Elsewhere, United are reportedly interested in Welsh goalkeeper Karl Darlow as backup cover, though the club are said to want to move on Altay Bayindir first to create financial headroom. The Turkish goalkeeper, who joined from Fenerbahce in September 2023, has attracted interest from Besiktas among others.
United have also confirmed a straight loan deal for André Onana, who will join Trabzonspor having lost his place to Senne Lammens following the Belgian’s impressive debut campaign. Onana will return to Manchester in 2027 with one year remaining on his contract, with Trabzonspor set to cover the majority of his wages.
United have yet to complete any new signings this summer, though a deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta has been agreed as Carrick looks to reshape the squad ahead of a push for Champions League qualification.
