UEFA introduces debut patches for first-time Champions League appearances this season

UEFA has introduced debut patches for the 2025-26 Champions League, with any player — including substitutes — making their first appearance in the competition required to wear the one-off badge during the match.

Once the game is over, each patch is retrieved and converted into a unique trading card, items that are expected to command significant sums on the collectables market. The initiative mirrors a long-established practice in the NBA, where debut patches attached to rookie jerseys are auctioned off and can fetch extraordinary prices. Cooper Flagg’s debut patch from his breakout season with the Dallas Mavericks is anticipated to sell for over $1 million, while a signed LeBron James rookie card is believed to be worth around $10 million.

The concept was also piloted at the 2026 World Cup as part of a licensing deal with trading card and stickers company Fanatics, where global stars including Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal wore debut patches that were subsequently turned into high-value collectables. Previous edition Golden Boot, Golden Glove, and Golden Ball winners received special patches in North America as well.

Several high-profile players are set to wear the patch during the Champions League’s opening match-week. At Manchester United, winger Bryan Mbeumo is expected to make his competition debut against Sabah FK, while midfielder Carlos Baleba is also in line for his first appearance in the tournament. Manager Michael Carrick indicated last week that Baleba’s debut is expected within 10 to 14 days, with the player likely to feature in a Premier League or Carabao Cup fixture first before stepping into Champions League action.
