Modestino Rodrigues secured a UFC contract on Tuesday after stopping Brandon Holmes in just 15 seconds during Week 4 of Dana White’s Contender Series 2026, though the finish immediately drew scrutiny over whether referee Chris Tognoni intervened too soon.

Rodrigues (8-1) dropped Holmes (6-2) with a sharp combination in their middleweight contest and followed up with ground strikes before Tognoni waved it off. The controversy centred on Holmes appearing conscious and still attempting to defend at the moment of stoppage — a detail White himself acknowledged, calling it one of the most contentious stoppages in DWCS history. Despite the debate, White saw enough from the 22-year-old to hand him a contract with the world’s premier MMA organisation.

For Rodrigues, the moment represented the payoff of a gruelling nine-month training camp spent away from his family. The Brazilian, nicknamed “The Slanderman”, said the opportunity exceeded anything he had allowed himself to imagine.

“I can’t even say that I had dreams about it because I never imagined I would be in this position,” Rodrigues said. “I worked so hard every day for this to happen. MMA changed my life. I’m ready to die out there — I live for this.”

The finish was entirely in keeping with Rodrigues’ professional record. All eight of his victories have come by stoppage, and six of them were completed inside two minutes. That finishing instinct, combined with the speed of Tuesday’s performance, was ultimately enough to convince White to overlook the officiating controversy.

Rodrigues now enters the UFC middleweight division as one of the more intriguing prospects to emerge from this season of the Contender Series, carrying a reputation for explosive, short-notice finishes into the deepest talent pool in MMA.
