Roberto Carlos lost 99% of the fortune accumulated during his football career, revealed the former Real Madrid left-back during a roundtable discussion on life after playing, organized as part of the Portugal Football Summit.

“Because of agents and family problems, I lost 99% of my football earnings. I made mistakes. That’s why I’m asking young players not to repeat them,” said the Brazilian, who spent most of his career at Real Madrid. He specified that he had to “restructure his financial and family situation” to recover.

The former international detailed the circumstances of this financial collapse: “I had a serious problem with my former agent. I also had a very serious family problem. One Thursday, I went to bed at midnight and on Friday, I received a pile of documents whose existence I didn’t even know about. That’s when I lost all control over my past.”

The case of Roberto Carlos is far from isolated in the football world. Emmanuel Adebayor and Yohan Mollo are among former players who have also been victims of unscrupulous agents or people presenting themselves as such. The Portugal Football Summit roundtable aimed precisely to raise awareness among professional players about the financial risks that await them after the end of their careers.
