David Kogan, chairman of the newly established Independent Football Regulator, has warned that he would step down if Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham attempted to exert political influence over the ongoing Manchester City Premier League charges case.

The warning signals the sensitivity surrounding the 115-charge case against City, which alleges a range of financial rule breaches across more than a decade. Kogan’s reported stance underlines the regulator’s determination to operate free from political interference as the independent commission continues its work.

Burnham, who has previously spoken publicly about the City charges and their potential implications for the club and the city, has not yet responded to the reported warning.

Separately, former City manager Pep Guardiola is expected to return to the Etihad Stadium for the club’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain. Guardiola, who left City at the end of last season after nine trophy-laden years in charge, has not been present at the ground since his departure, making the visit a notable moment for supporters.

The Manchester City charges case remains one of the most consequential proceedings in English football history. The club faces accusations covering alleged breaches of Premier League rules relating to financial fair play, player and manager payments, and failure to provide accurate financial information, among others. City have consistently denied any wrongdoing.

The independent commission hearing the case has no fixed public timeline for delivering a verdict, and proceedings are expected to continue for some time yet.
