Amad brands 10-man United's 2-0 loss at Atletico Madrid a 'f***ing disgrace'
Manchester United fell to their first Champions League defeat of the season, losing 2-0 in Madrid after Leny Yoro's controversial red card. Winger Amad vented his fury on social media, while manager Michael Carrick pointed to four squandered chances.
Manchester United winger Amad publicly condemned his side’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, posting on Snapchat: “F***ing disgrace; I have no words.”
The Red Devils were behind within the first minute, Pablo Barrios giving Atletico an early lead that United spent much of the night chasing. Their task became near-impossible when centre-back Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review — referee Glenn Nyberg had initially played on before the technology intervened, ruling that Yoro had brought down Jonathan David as the last defender. Ademola Lookman added a second in the closing stages to seal the result.
Amad, 22, came on as a second-half substitute as United pushed for a way back into the game, but the visitors could not convert any of their opportunities. Manager Michael Carrick acknowledged the frustration while crediting Atletico’s setup.
“It is a tough enough place to come and to get the start we had obviously puts us in a more difficult situation, but I thought we grew into the game,” Carrick said. “We had four big chances, big opportunities and the game can look very different. They were really good opportunities — they weren’t just little half ones.”
Carrick added that the red card proved decisive: “Then we had Bruno’s [Fernandes] chance again, another good opportunity, and then the red card. That goes against us and then it’s difficult after that.”
Amad was not alone in his frustration. Lisandro Martinez also spoke out after the final whistle, directing criticism at the club’s board over what he perceived as insufficient investment during the summer transfer window. Carrick said he had not yet seen Martinez’s post-match interview and preferred to focus on the performance.
The defeat leaves United under mounting pressure domestically as well. They have won just one of their six Premier League matches this season and face a trip to Leeds on Sunday before returning to Champions League action the following Wednesday.
