Barrios strikes in 47 seconds as 10-man United fall 2-0 to Atlético Madrid
Pablo Barrios scored after just 47 seconds and Ademola Lookman sealed a 2-0 Champions League win for Atlético Madrid over Manchester United at the Metropolitano on Tuesday, with Leny Yoro's red card in the 74th minute ending any hope of a United comeback.
Pablo Barrios scored after 47 seconds and Ademola Lookman converted a late rebound as Atlético Madrid beat Manchester United 2-0 in the Champions League league phase at the Metropolitano on Tuesday, 13 October, earning Diego Simeone’s side their first points in the competition this season.
Barrios sets the tone inside a minute
Barrios finished a move initiated by a pass from Alex Baena on the left to give Atlético an almost instant advantage. The hosts continued to threaten throughout: Grimaldo struck the crossbar with a free-kick before half-time, and Julián Álvarez hit the post with a volley after the break.
Johnny Cardoso appeared to double the lead, but VAR ruled the goal out after detecting a handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up. Despite that reprieve, United struggled to impose themselves. According to figures reported by AS, Atlético held 57.8 per cent possession and registered 10 shots to United’s 42.2 per cent and seven attempts.
Bruno Fernandes did strike the crossbar to give United a moment of hope, but the match turned decisively in the 74th minute when Leny Yoro was sent off after being judged to have denied Jonathan David a clear scoring opportunity.
Lookman seals it from the rebound
David, introduced as a substitute, forced a save from Senne Lammens shortly after Yoro’s dismissal, and Lookman converted the rebound in the 79th minute to put the result beyond doubt. Jan Oblak preserved the clean sheet in stoppage time with a save from Matheus Cunha as United pressed once more.
The win moved Atlético to three points in the Champions League league phase ahead of their third matchday fixture the following week.
A victory dedicated to Koke
The result carried a deeply personal dimension for the squad. Captain Koke’s mother died on the morning of the match, and the team observed a minute’s silence before kick-off. Simeone was visibly moved during the tribute and again when Barrios scored. Players spoke after the game about Koke’s significance to the group and their desire to support him and his family through the loss.
The three points were dedicated to their captain, making a significant European night one that will be remembered as much for the circumstances surrounding it as for the performance on the pitch.
