Real Madrid lead race to sign Man Utd wonderkid JJ Gabriel after his 16th birthday
Manchester United face losing highly rated academy forward JJ Gabriel, who turned 16 on Tuesday, with Real Madrid emerging as frontrunners after the teenager formally requested his registration be cancelled to pursue a move abroad.
Manchester United are facing the likely departure of academy forward JJ Gabriel after the 16-year-old formally informed the club of his intention to leave, with Real Madrid emerging as the frontrunners to sign him.
Gabriel’s 16th birthday on Tuesday marks a significant turning point in the saga. British players are generally prohibited from moving to overseas clubs before the age of 18, but Gabriel may be able to bypass that restriction by obtaining an EU passport — either through his father, who represented the Republic of Ireland, or his mother, who is of Greek-Cypriot descent. If he secures that documentation, United would be powerless to block a move abroad.
The teenager sent shockwaves through Old Trafford last month when he requested his registration be cancelled so he could join another club. United have been working to persuade Gabriel and his representatives to reconsider, but there is growing pessimism inside the club that they will succeed, with the player seemingly determined to leave.
His situation has triggered a scramble among some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all shown interest, and several Premier League sides are also monitoring developments.
Barcelona appeared to be an early frontrunner after Gabriel and his family travelled to the city following his formal departure request, with the teenager training there with a private coach. However, Barcelona have since publicly ruled themselves out of the running.
That appears to leave Real Madrid as the most likely destination. Los Blancos are understood to be strong admirers of Gabriel and, according to Sky Germany, are prepared to offer him a significant long-term contract. Real Madrid have a track record of making substantial financial commitments to teenage prospects — they handed a 16-year-old Martin Odegaard a deal reportedly worth £80,000 a week in 2015, along with a lucrative bonus package. Gabriel is not expected to receive an offer on that scale given the changes in football’s financial landscape over the past decade, but Madrid’s interest is described as serious.
Should Gabriel fail to obtain an EU passport, a domestic move remains possible, though Premier League academy registration rules would complicate an immediate switch to another English club. A move abroad, by contrast, would allow him to begin training and playing without waiting until the end of the season.
Regarded as one of the most promising academy players in world football, Gabriel’s potential departure would represent a significant blow to United’s long-term development plans at a time when the club is already navigating a turbulent period on and off the pitch.
