Real Madrid close in on Manchester United teen Gabriel as club braces for legal fight
Real Madrid are in pole position to sign Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel, with the deal at an advanced stage despite no direct contact between the clubs. United are expected to pursue legal action to secure a fair fee once the transfer is completed.
Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, with the deal understood to be at an advanced stage — though United insist no direct contact has been made between the two clubs.
Gabriel, who has been training in Spain for the past six weeks, last appeared for United’s Under-19s in September, scoring a hat-trick against Sabah before his camp submitted a request for him to leave. Reports this week claimed Madrid had reached a verbal agreement to sign the teenager, a development that caught United off guard.
The transfer will be subject to FIFA’s strict regulations on the movement of minors, but the belief within the game is that Gabriel’s family would not have pushed for an exit without confidence they could navigate the regulatory hurdles. Once a switch to Madrid is formalised, United are expected to pursue legal action in an attempt to receive a fair fee for his departure.
The prolonged nature of the situation has drawn concern from those close to the player, with the consensus being that Gabriel needs to return to an elite academy environment as quickly as possible to avoid losing further development time. While he has received individual coaching during his spell in Spain, the episode has kept him away from competitive football for the better part of two months.
Some United supporters have questioned why Madrid — a club more associated with signing established stars than nurturing academy talent — would be the destination for a player of Gabriel’s age, though his ability has clearly attracted serious attention at the highest level.
Cameron Jerome joins United’s coaching staff
Away from the Gabriel situation, United have made two notable appointments within their youth system. Cameron Jerome, the former Premier League striker who scored 163 goals across more than 700 senior appearances for clubs including Birmingham City, Stoke City, Crystal Palace and Norwich City, has joined the Under-21s as an individual development coach.
The 40-year-old, who ran his own coaching business after retiring, will work under U21 head coach Adam Lawrence alongside former Premier League defender Alan Wright. Jerome’s focus will be on developing forwards, with particular emphasis on finishing techniques and shooting angles.
Peter Sturgess has also been brought in as part of United’s broader effort to provide players with mentoring both on and off the pitch, reflecting the club’s investment in the holistic development of their academy talent.
