Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern circle as 15-year-old Gabriel seeks Manchester United exit

Manchester United are fighting to retain 15-year-old academy forward JJ Gabriel after the teenager submitted a request to cancel his registration at the club, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich all reportedly circling the youngster.

Gabriel has yet to make his senior debut but trained regularly alongside United’s first team following a standout U18 campaign in which he scored 26 goals in 29 appearances. He also netted a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League, appearing to have a clear route into the senior setup under Ruben Amorim.

However, the situation shifted after Gabriel was omitted from United’s ‘A’ list for their Champions League squad, which prevented him from featuring in last week’s victory over Sabah. That exclusion is understood to have triggered his request to be released, though United have not yet accepted it and believe the matter can still be resolved.

The timing is significant. Gabriel turns 16 on 6 October, and if he holds an Irish passport — his father Joe O’Cearuill represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing career — he would become eligible to sign for a European club at that point. Premier League rules prevent under-17 players from signing professional contracts, meaning a domestic move is blocked until the end of the season unless United agree to terminate his deal. A transfer to a continental club, however, remains a live possibility.

United are exploring whether they can prevent Gabriel from moving abroad, though the relevant regulations are described as unclear. Any international transfer involving a player under 18 would also require FIFA approval.

According to The Athletic, Real Madrid have already scouted Gabriel and came away impressed. Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich are also said to be monitoring the situation. The quartet of elite clubs underlines the level of interest the teenager has generated despite never having played a competitive senior minute.

United continue to hold discussions with Gabriel’s camp in an attempt to find a resolution before his birthday next month.
