Real Madrid and PSG eye Aston Villa's Zion Suzuki just weeks after his arrival
Aston Villa face an early battle to keep goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with Real Madrid, PSG, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all reported to be monitoring the Japanese international after his impressive start at Villa Park.
Aston Villa are bracing for a fight to retain goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain among a cluster of European heavyweights reported to be tracking the 24-year-old Japanese international, according to TEAMtalk — just weeks after he joined the club.
Suzuki has drawn widespread attention for his elite distribution and composed performances as a replacement for the departed Emiliano Martinez. Despite big clubs previously passing on the opportunity to sign him, his strong start at Villa Park and a solid World Cup showing have now placed him firmly on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest sides.
Real Madrid are said to be working on a short-term extension for veteran goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but with an eye on the future between the sticks, Suzuki has emerged as a serious long-term target at the Bernabéu. FourFourTwo understands PSG had previously considered a move for the goalkeeper before opting against it.
Liverpool are also said to be monitoring the situation amid uncertainty over Alisson Becker’s future, while Arsenal and Manchester City are named in the same report as clubs assessing the long-term viability of a move. Manchester United had been linked with Suzuki at an earlier stage. Transfermarkt currently values the goalkeeper at €30 million.
The interest in Suzuki compounds an already complex picture at Villa Park. Earlier this week, Guillem Balague reported for the BBC that manager Unai Emery is close to agreeing a contract extension that would hand him greater responsibility over the club’s long-term development. Emery oversaw a significant rebuild over the summer, with Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins all departing.
Suzuki is not the only new recruit attracting outside attention. Barcelona have also been linked with fellow new signing Johan Manzambi, adding to the pressure on a squad that Emery is still bedding in.
Villa will be reluctant to entertain offers for a player they have only just signed. With the club back in the Champions League and a stadium upgrade under way, there is a belief internally that the need to sell key players is less acute than it was during the previous cycle — but the calibre of clubs now circling Suzuki will test that resolve.
