Ratcliffe killed agreed Man Utd transfer as agents warn 'it's a mess' at Old Trafford
Sir Jim Ratcliffe blocked a transfer Jason Wilcox had already agreed, according to agents speaking to the Daily Mail, with one adding that budget constraints — not the sporting director — are driving decisions at Manchester United.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally intervened to block a transfer that Manchester United sporting director Jason Wilcox had already agreed, agents have told the Daily Mail, painting a picture of fractured decision-making at Old Trafford as the club navigates a difficult start to the season.
One agent said bluntly: “We had a deal agreed with Jason and then Jim got involved and tried to change it. He ended up killing it.” A second agent added: “Jason is in an incredibly difficult position. Everybody would think he’s the decision-maker at the club, but he absolutely isn’t. Manchester United is run by the owners, Sir Jim and the Glazers. If you sack Wilcox, nothing will change. It’s a mess.”
The unnamed player whose move was blocked has not been identified, but the reports emerge in the context of United’s midfield recruitment this summer. Wilcox was understood to be a strong admirer of Elliot Anderson, the England international who left Nottingham Forest for Manchester City in a £116 million deal. Ratcliffe’s strict budget, however, made that fee unworkable, and United instead brought in Carlos Baleba for £70 million, Andrey Santos for £50 million, and Youri Tielemans for £35 million — signing two midfielders for less than Anderson’s price tag, with funds remaining for Baleba.
Wilcox has faced mounting scrutiny in recent weeks, most publicly after defender Lisandro Martinez delivered a pointed post-match assessment following United’s Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid. The Argentine did not spare the club’s hierarchy, saying: “I expected more from our technical director. I have to be honest. And also, as players, we have to do more, but it’s also important when you make a strong squad to be ready for these kinds of nights.”
Martinez also reflected on the broader trajectory of the club: “We did a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, from above, to bring more players to compete, because many, many teams bring many players in as well.”
The agents’ accounts suggest the structural tension at United runs deeper than any single transfer. With Ratcliffe and the Glazers retaining ultimate financial control, Wilcox appears to be operating with significant constraints on his authority — a dynamic that, according to those working around the club, is unlikely to change regardless of any personnel decisions.
