Quansah suspended for Argentina semi-final as England's other yellow-card risks escape caution

Jarell Quansah remains the only England player banned for the World Cup semi-final against Argentina after Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly all avoided bookings against Norway. Yellow card tallies were reset after the quarter-finals, meaning only a red card in the semi-final can trigger a final suspension.

Jarell Quansah will miss England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina after FIFA extended his straight red card suspension to two matches, ruling the Bayer Leverkusen defender out of both the Norway quarter-final and the last-four clash with the reigning world champions.

Quansah was shown a direct red card against Mexico for a heavy challenge on Jesus Gallardo. Although FIFA’s standard disciplinary regulations set a one-game ban for a straight red, the governing body increased the punishment to two matches after determining the challenge constituted serious foul play. The 23-year-old is expected to be available again should England reach the final.

Four other England players — Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O’Reilly — had been walking a disciplinary tightrope heading into the Norway game, each one booking away from a semi-final ban. All four escaped caution, leaving England with no additional suspension concerns beyond Quansah.

Under FIFA tournament regulations, players who collect two yellow cards in separate matches are handed a one-match ban. However, those tallies are periodically wiped as the competition progresses. The reset that took effect after the quarter-final stage means no player can be suspended for the World Cup final as a result of yellow cards accumulated in the semi-finals. Only a red card at the last-four stage carries over into a potential final ban.

England’s semi-final against Argentina therefore arrives with their squad largely intact, with Quansah’s absence the sole enforced change from a disciplinary standpoint.
