Quansah sent off by VAR as high tackle sparks bench brawl in England's World Cup clash with Mexico
Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card after a VAR review for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo in England's World Cup Round of 16 tie against Mexico at the Azteca, with punches reportedly thrown as both benches clashed.
Jarell Quansah has been sent off in England’s World Cup Round of 16 clash with Mexico at the Azteca after referee Alireza Faghani was directed to the pitchside monitor by VAR and upgraded his initial decision to a straight red card.
The Liverpool defender slid in to contest the ball, but replays showed his foot was dangerously high when it connected with Mexico left-back Jesus Gallardo, who was left down on the turf. Faghani had allowed play to continue before the VAR intervention prompted him to reconsider.
The challenge ignited a furious reaction from the Mexico bench, with BBC Sport commentator Alan Shearer reporting that punches were thrown as both sets of backroom staff clashed on the touchline.
England must now see out the remainder of the knockout tie with ten men, a significant blow in what was already a tightly contested fixture against the host nation.
