The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled that all five contentious refereeing decisions during Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford were correct, ending speculation that the result could have been different had officials decided otherwise.

Referee Jarred Gillett waved away multiple penalty appeals from United during the match, while VAR ruled that James Hill — who was in an offside position — did not interfere in the play in the build-up to Rayan’s cushioned volley from a free-kick. The panel, comprising three former players or coaches, one Premier League representative, and one from Pro Ref, returned a unanimous 5-0 verdict in favour of each on-field call.

Among the five incidents reviewed were potential penalties for fouls on Amad and Bryan Mbeumo. The panel also assessed two separate incidents involving Evanilson, finding it correct that his goal just after half-time was disallowed for offside and that he should not have been penalised for a possible handball.

The defeat was United’s eighth match without a win in all competitions, coming just days after a heavy loss away to Como in the Champions League. The Bournemouth result heaped further pressure on manager Michael Carrick, who also oversaw a goalless defeat at Chelsea the following weekend.

United chiefs were reported to be planning a review of Carrick’s position during the November international break, with two fixtures identified as a window for him to demonstrate his credentials. The first of those came on Tuesday evening in the Champions League at home to AS Roma.

United fell two goals behind inside 18 minutes after Donyell Malen and Matias Soule both scored early, but staged a dramatic second-half comeback. Bruno Fernandes converted from the penalty spot just before the hour — retaking after encroachment was penalised — before Matheus Cunha scored twice in the final ten minutes to complete the turnaround.

Cunha’s evening ended on a sour note, however, as he was sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession, the first of which came after he removed his shirt and jumped into the crowd following his winning goal. The dismissal will result in a suspension for United’s next European fixture.
