FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has spoken publicly for the first time since the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, who died on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision during a second-division match in Spain. Spanish police have since opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter.

Owono collided with De Miguel near the halfway line, with the Tenerife forward struck in the chest by the goalkeeper’s knee. De Miguel collapsed immediately, prompting teammates on the pitch to call for urgent medical assistance. He was taken to hospital but could not be saved, passing away at the age of 30.

In a joint statement, FC Andorra and Owono expressed their grief. “These are being the most difficult days of my life,” Owono said. “I am struggling to find the words and find it very difficult to assimilate anything that has happened.”

“I feel an enormous pain for the loss of Jesús. I think of him, his family, and everyone who loved him. I know there will be many issues to address; I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect. But right now, honestly, I cannot think of anything else except Jesús and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesús.”

The club accompanied the statement with a request for sensitivity from the public. “FC Andorra continues to be deeply affected by the death of Jesús de Miguel,” the club said. “FC Andorra asks for the utmost sensitivity and respect.”

De Miguel’s death has cast Spanish football into mourning, with the incident sending shockwaves through the second division and beyond. The police investigation is described as routine procedure under Spanish law following an unexpected death, and no charges have been filed.
