Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was visibly furious with teammate Jeremy Jacquet after Mason Greenwood’s deflected free kick drew Fenerbahce level in their Champions League encounter, with the Brazilian left stranded as the ball cannoned through a hole in the defensive wall.

Greenwood stepped up following a foul by Dominik Szoboszlai and struck a free kick that connected with Jacquet’s midriff after the Frenchman turned his back on the ball. The deflection sent it through the gap Jacquet had created, leaving Alisson unable to move back across his goal in time.

Pundit Ally McCoist was unsparing in his assessment. “I think the goalkeeper will not be too happy with his wall,” he said. “It’s Jacquet and he’s livid — does he turn his back? He certainly does. You’ve got to face it. The goalkeeper is livid, absolutely livid, and with justification as well. He’s side on — someone who has had a good start to the season.”

Former England international Karen Carney echoed that verdict at half-time. “Alisson was fuming. Rightly so. You can’t turn, Jacquet. I don’t even know if it was going in,” she said, suggesting the free kick may not have beaten Alisson had the wall held its shape.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman was equally damning. “That’s self-inflicted; that’s an awful goal,” he said. “A big gap in the wall. It bounces off the big, tough centre-half turning his back. It should never ever happen. That’s a poor goal.”

The incident cast a shadow over what had otherwise been a promising start to the campaign for Jacquet, who had impressed in earlier appearances. The wall error, however, handed Fenerbahce a route back into a game Liverpool had been controlling, and drew sharp criticism from across the punditry panel.
