Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga demand fundamental FIFA reform

The four biggest European leagues — Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga — have jointly published a letter targeting FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino, demanding a structural overhaul of world football’s governing body.

The text, signed by the leaders of the four leagues, demands « a fundamental reform of governance to restore clear constitutional limits within FIFA ». The signatories notably wish for independent checks and balances to be preserved to prevent any interference, and for their involvement in the body’s decisions to be substantially strengthened. They say they are currently reduced to the role of « mere spectators ».

This offensive comes amid persistent tensions since the end of the 2026 World Cup, when Infantino’s desire to cede parts of the World Cup to private investors sparked a wave of opposition. In place since 2016, the FIFA president opened the door this week to discussions on possible adjustments — an opening deemed insufficient by the four leagues, which are calling for far deeper changes.

As the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027 approaches, the letter calls on all actors in world football — confederations, clubs and player unions — to mobilize behind this initiative. The document thus constitutes a political signal sent well beyond European borders.

Notably absent from the initiative, the French professional football league (LFP), headed by Vincent Labrune, chose not to join this joint action.
