Tuchel warns Cole Palmer over 'missed opportunity' as England withdrawal raises doubts

Thomas Tuchel has issued a direct warning to Cole Palmer over his England future, telling the Chelsea forward that repeated absences from international camps are costing him the chance to cement his place in the squad.

Palmer was among five players to withdraw from the latest England squad, with load management initially cited as the reason — though Tuchel later clarified that the 22-year-old was managing discomfort and pain that prevented him from competing at the highest level. The withdrawal comes after Palmer was left out of the World Cup squad last summer, despite an impressive run of form for Chelsea under Xabi Alonso, where he has formed part of an exciting attacking trio.

“For sure, it’s a missed opportunity,” Tuchel said ahead of England’s Nations League fixture against Spain. “It’s another missed opportunity, it’s just a fact, he misses way too many camps with injuries. I only want to rely on what I witness and see from my team. For that you have to be in camp — if you’re not in camp, there’s a next level to impress that you cannot achieve, you cannot do it unless you’re with me on the pitch.”

Tuchel also pushed back on the framing of Palmer’s absence as a load-management decision, drawing a distinction between what Chelsea communicated and how the situation was initially characterised.

“My understanding is he plays with this discomfort and pain and he cannot compete at the highest level with this pain and withdrew,” Tuchel said. “Chelsea informed us of this understanding — we’re not managing load. I used the term of an international break, but from the other side it’s totally different.”

The England head coach was careful to frame the issue around the culture he is building within the squad rather than singling Palmer out for criticism, emphasising that the environment he has created is one players should want to be part of.

“What we created is a competitive environment, but also one the players love to be in — walk through the door, love to train with each other, be with each other. That’s what togetherness and brotherhood looks like. We will never compromise on that. We will never let this creep in, the feeling that players don’t want to come. We focus on the players who absolutely want to play for England.”

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Palmer’s recurring unavailability for international duty risks undermining his case for a place in Tuchel’s plans, regardless of the form he continues to show at club level.
