Premier League enlists top government barrister as Man City face four potential punishments
The Premier League has brought in Sir James Eadie KC — the UK government's leading civil barrister — alongside law firm Slaughter and May to bolster its legal team in the ongoing financial charges case against Manchester City.
The Premier League has significantly strengthened its legal team in the financial charges case against Manchester City, enlisting Sir James Eadie KC and law firm Slaughter and May to work alongside existing counsel Bird & Bird, according to The Lawyer.
Eadie holds the title of ‘Treasury Devil’, the designation given to the UK government’s first-choice civil barrister, and has appeared in more UK Supreme Court cases than any other advocate over the past decade. His appointment sets up a high-profile legal contest with Lord Pannick KC, who represents City and ranks just behind Eadie in Supreme Court appearances. Both Eadie and Slaughter and May are understood to have been advising the Premier League for several months.
City are accused of breaching financial regulations between 2009 and 2018 as part of an alleged £830 million scheme to artificially inflate commercial sponsorship deals. The club have consistently denied any wrongdoing and continue to challenge the allegations through the appeals process.
With the case still unresolved, speculation over potential punishments has intensified. According to The i Paper, the ‘worst-case scenario’ of City being crowned Premier League champions even if found guilty of the most serious financial breaches ‘cannot be ruled out’, with four distinct forms of punishment said to be under consideration by the independent commission.
On the pitch, City suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday, falling 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. The result allowed Arsenal to draw level with Pep Guardiola’s side, with both clubs now sitting on 21 points.
