Paul Pogba and Juan Mata shared a reunion in New York City over the weekend, with the two former Manchester United midfielders crossing paths at an Adidas event held during the World Cup.
Mata, who is in the United States working as a pundit for ITV, posted a photo on Instagram of Pogba embracing him after their chance meeting. Writing in Spanish, the 33-year-old said: “Love you, my friend!! @paulpogba. It’s always such a joy to see you.”
Both players departed Old Trafford in the summer of 2022, having combined for three major trophies during their time in Manchester. Mata made 285 appearances for United after joining from Chelsea for a then-club record £37.1m in January 2014, scoring 51 goals and contributing 43 assists before moving to Galatasaray. He is currently playing for Melbourne Victory.
Pogba’s post-United career has been considerably more turbulent. After rejoining Juventus, he left the Serie A club in November 2024 following an 18-month ban for a doping violation. Despite links to several clubs, including United, the 2018 World Cup winner eventually signed for Monaco on a two-year deal confirmed in June 2024. He made six appearances for the Ligue 1 side last season without scoring or providing an assist.
Mata has long been an admirer of the French midfielder. Speaking in 2019, when Pogba was being linked with a move away from Old Trafford, Mata described him as “a fantastic midfielder and a very good guy,” adding that Pogba was a “positive influence” who “brings everyone together.” Sunday’s reunion in New York suggested that warmth between the two has not faded.
