Thomas Tuchel’s England finished top of World Cup 2026 Group L after a 2-0 win over Panama in East Rutherford on Saturday, setting up a last-32 tie against the third-place finisher from Group I or Group K.

England’s progression had actually been confirmed the night before the Panama match, when a combination of results elsewhere did the work for them. The 48-team format required only that four third-placed teams finish on three points or fewer — a threshold already met by South Korea (Group A) and Scotland (Group C). Senegal’s 5-0 demolition of Iraq in Group I and Spain’s 1-0 defeat of Uruguay in Group H then provided the two remaining results England needed, meaning Tuchel’s side walked out against Panama already knowing they were through.

The group win itself carries significant weight in the draw. By topping Group L, England have landed on the easier side of the bracket, avoiding a potential last-16 collision with Spain that would have awaited them as runners-up.

As things stand, England will face Senegal — who finished third in Group I — in the round of 32. However, if DR Congo beat Uzbekistan in their final Group K fixture, England would instead face DR Congo as the group’s third-place finisher.

The potential route beyond that makes for compelling reading. A last-16 win could bring England face-to-face with Group A winners Mexico at the Estadio Azteca — a high-altitude test in one of football’s most iconic venues. Should they advance, Group C winners Brazil loom as a possible quarter-final opponent, with Argentina — Lionel Messi having scored five goals in the group stage — a potential semi-final adversary.

England’s path to this point was not entirely smooth. After an encouraging opening win against Croatia, Tuchel’s side were held to a goalless draw by Ghana, leaving questions about their consistency heading into the Panama decider. The 2-0 victory answered some of those doubts, even if the knockout rounds will demand considerably more.
