Oyarzabal shuts down Barcelona move with blunt 'I'm where I want to be'
Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal has emphatically ruled out a transfer to Barcelona, telling El Chiringuito that rejecting the Blaugrana is entirely possible and that San Sebastián is where he intends to stay.
Mikel Oyarzabal has delivered his most definitive rejection yet of Barcelona transfer speculation, telling El Chiringuito that he is entirely content at Real Sociedad and that turning down the Blaugrana is not only possible — others have already done it.
“Can you say no to Barcelona? Yes, you can. Of course you can. There are players who have told them no,” the 29-year-old said. “I’m immensely happy in San Sebastián, I consider Real Sociedad my home, it’s a place where I can live the life I want with my family. I’ve always said that I’m where I want to be.”
It is not a new position for the Real Sociedad captain and Spain forward, who has repeatedly stated his contentment at La Real throughout the summer. Yet journalists have continued to press him on the Camp Nou link, and this latest response carries the weight of a man drawing a definitive line.
Oyarzabal’s stance is reinforced by the structure of his contract at Anoeta, which includes a €75 million release clause — a figure that has always made him a complicated target. His profile makes the speculation sit even more awkwardly: he is the club’s captain, a two-time Copa del Rey winner with La Real, and a player who surpassed 100 La Liga goals this past season.
For Barcelona, the message is unambiguous. The club’s search for attacking reinforcements this summer has run into difficulty on several fronts. Julián Álvarez remains their primary objective, with head coach Hansi Flick understood to have contacted the Argentina striker directly, though Atlético Madrid have made clear they have no intention of selling despite Álvarez submitting an exit request. French forward Eli Junior Kroupi has been mentioned as a potential alternative, though he has attracted interest from multiple clubs and represents no straightforward solution.
Real Sociedad are already involved in one separate deal with Barcelona this summer, adding a layer of complexity to the relationship between the two clubs. Oyarzabal, however, has made his own position impossible to misread.
