Manchester United’s agreed move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson is in serious jeopardy after a knee issue reportedly surfaced during a medical examination in the UK, casting doubt over a deal that had appeared close to completion.

United had struck an agreement with Atalanta worth up to £38m in early June and had already agreed personal terms with the 27-year-old Brazilian international. Ederson himself had appeared to confirm the move was imminent, hinting during the World Cup that a switch to Old Trafford was all but done.

The Mirror reported on Friday evening that the underlying knee problem discovered at the medical has derailed the transfer, with United now unlikely to proceed. Several other outlets echoed those claims, suggesting the deal has been called off.

However, contradictory reports emerged at the same time, indicating that the process surrounding three potential signings — including Ederson — remains ongoing and that the deal is not definitively dead. The situation remains fluid, with no official confirmation from either club.

The uncertainty around Ederson comes as United close in on a separate midfield addition. The club are reportedly edging towards a £48m agreement with Chelsea for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, a deal that appears to be progressing independently of the Ederson situation.

Should the Ederson transfer collapse, it would represent a significant setback for United’s summer recruitment plans, particularly in central midfield, where the club have been looking to add quality and depth ahead of the new season.
