Olise risks suspension for semi-final after controversial yellow card against Paraguay
Michael Olise received a contentious yellow card in stoppage time of the Round of 16 against Paraguay (1-0) and faces suspension for a potential semi-final if he is cautioned against Morocco in the quarter-finals.
Michael Olise left the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a victory (1-0) against Paraguay, but also with a yellow card that threatens the rest of his tournament. The Bayern Munich winger was sanctioned in the 97th minute following an altercation with Paraguayan midfielder Matias Galarza, who collapsed after a shirt pull — a decision deemed harsh by observers.
The competition regulations provide for a reset of cautions after the quarter-finals. In concrete terms, if Olise receives a second yellow card on Thursday against Morocco, he will automatically be suspended for the potential semi-final. A scenario particularly feared by France: with five assists, the former Crystal Palace player is the tournament’s leading passer and an undisputed starter in the Blues’ setup.
Olise is not alone in this situation. Bradley Barcola (19th minute) and Manu Koné (81st minute) were also cautioned during this tense Round of 16, refereed by an Uzbek official whose decisions sparked controversy — all three yellow cards of the match were distributed to the French players. However, Barcola and Koné are less exposed for now: neither is among the undisputed starters, which would make their absence less damaging for the Blues than an Olise absence.
France has achieved its first objective by qualifying for the quarter-finals. The second — preserving its key players for the rest of the tournament — remains uncertain, and will depend largely on Olise’s conduct against Morocco.
