Jurgen Klopp has agreed to become Germany’s new head coach, ending his sabbatical from football management to take charge of the national team following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure.

Nagelsmann left his position after Germany were knocked out of the World Cup in a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, despite the side having topped Group E in the tournament’s group stage.

Klopp, 59, is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers of his generation, having led Liverpool to the Premier League title, the Champions League, and a host of other honours during his nine-year tenure at Anfield before stepping down at the end of the 2023-24 season.

His appointment would represent a significant moment for German football, with the country turning to one of its most celebrated coaching exports to rebuild after a turbulent World Cup campaign. Klopp is himself German and began his managerial career in the Bundesliga with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, where he won back-to-back league titles and reached the Champions League final.

Full contract details have not been officially confirmed, though reports indicate the terms of the agreement have been finalised. An official announcement from the German Football Association is expected to follow.
